1. Make conversation a priority<\/h3>\n

Young children are like sponges, so it\u2019s important to immerse them in language right from the start.<\/p>\n

The number of words children learn in the early years is closely related to their future success.<\/p>\n

\u2018The quality of parent-child interactions is one of the biggest factors influencing vocabulary<\/strong>, so it\u2019s vital to talk to your child and expose them to different words.<\/p>\n

\u2018Try naming objects, using number words, and introducing words that explain emotions: the more words they understand, the more they will be able to use.<\/p>\n

2. Read together<\/h3>\n

It\u2019s important to make reading a routine, with a regular slot everyday.<\/p>\n

Keep reading aloud to your child, even once they\u2019re able to read independently<\/strong>: Kids love to hear stories, and you can build their vocabulary by choosing books that would be too difficult for them to read themselves.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t just stick to stories: reading\u00a0non-fiction\u00a0books, children\u2019s newspapers and\u00a0comics<\/a>\u00a0will expose your child to a wider range of words.<\/p>\n

3. Play word games<\/h3>\n

From I Spy to Scrabble and Bananagrams, there\u2019s a huge range of\u00a0word games<\/a>\u00a0that will help your child learn new words.<\/p>\n

4. Use words in sentences<\/h3>\n

There\u2019s no point in your child learning new words if they don\u2019t know how to use them.\u00a0Getting them to use a word in a spoken or written sentence will help them understand its meaning and context.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If your child gets weekly\u00a0spellings\u00a0from school, get them to write a sentence that includes each word, encouraging them to look it up in a dictionary if they\u2019re unsure of its meaning.<\/p>\n

5. Introduce a word of the day<\/h3>\n

Introducing a new word each day will boost your child\u2019s vocabulary by 365 words every year, and is an activity that the whole family can get involved with.<\/p>\n

You could use a word-a-day calendar or a website or app to suggest new words, or pick them out of a dictionary.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Make sure your child knows the meaning of the word, as they\u2019ll then be able to use it in their own speaking and writing.<\/p>\n
